It's been one year since we lost my brother-in-law to pancreatic cancer. He is sorely missed. I'd known him since I was around 11 years old, so he (probably unknowingly) had a profound effect on me growing up & shaping who I am today. Sharing his love of Chris Morris, Oscar Wilde & even his cult-like obsession with BBC Midlands News presenter Nick Owen. He was an exceptionally funny guy and would often try and convince me that 'sage shares most of its chemical composition with the synthetic drug meow meow'. He also once had a t-shirt made-up for me for Xmas that simply said 'I know Foals' on it.
Steering through life has been much harder without him. He was a potent source of intellect & force for good. He was a buoyancy aid that would help you navigate through life. Now we have to navigate these seas without him. These days it feels like we need people like him more than ever.
As someone who always supported me, especially in music endeavours - I felt an unwavering desire I should do something in his honour (along with some sense of catharsis that comes with it). I have made a solo piano record of 13 tracks - all proceeds (after bandcamp fees) will go to Pancreatic Cancer UK. Alternatively you can donate on the just giving page (link in comments) & I will email you the record (please make sure your email is available). It was recorded in London & Worcestershire & includes ambient drones & field recordings of places he used to frequent in Swanage, Dorset, southeast England. I'm super proud of it & think he would have liked it (but still argued it was not in Nick Cave's league).
The 5 year survival rate for pancreatic cancer is still unbelievably low. By supporting Pancreatic Cancer UK we can help with identifying issues earlier, improving treatment & revolutionising care. The research conducted today will save lives in the future.
In loving memory of Dr Andy Johnson, who leaves behind my sister, niece & nephew - this one's for you out surfing the astral plane somewhere.
